Does the Cochrane review prove that vaping helps you quit smoking?
It provides high-certainty evidence that, in clinical trial settings, nicotine e-cigarettes help more adults quit for at least 6 months than NRT. "High certainty" means multiple high-quality RCTs converge on this finding. However, real-world results depend on your individual circumstances, the device used, the support you receive, and your motivation level.
Is vaping safer than smoking cigarettes?
The Cochrane review focused on cessation effectiveness, not long-term safety. However, the broader scientific consensus, including a National Academies report, is that vaping exposes users to fewer toxicants than combustible cigarettes. "Fewer toxicants" does not mean "safe" — vaping is not risk-free. The healthiest option is always to stop all nicotine use.
What does "high-certainty evidence" actually mean?
The GRADE system rates evidence certainty as high, moderate, low, or very low. "High" means the reviewers are confident that the true effect is close to the estimate, and further research is very unlikely to change the conclusion. This is the strongest rating in evidence-based medicine.
Should I use vaping to quit if I've never smoked?
No. The Cochrane evidence applies exclusively to adult cigarette smokers attempting to quit. Non-smokers who start vaping are taking on health risks without any offsetting benefit. Youth and non-smokers should not use any nicotine product.
What about dual use — vaping and smoking?
The Cochrane review notes that dual use (continuing to smoke while vaping) does not deliver the same health benefits as complete cessation. The goal of using vapes for cessation is to transition completely off combustible cigarettes. If you find yourself still smoking daily after several weeks of vaping, consider consulting a quit line or healthcare provider.
Does the type of device matter?
The review pooled all nicotine e-cigarette types together (cigalikes, vape pens, pod systems). It cannot tell you whether a specific device performs better than another for cessation. However, pod systems and refillable devices tend to deliver nicotine more efficiently than older cigalike models. See our refillable pod systems comparison for device-specific guidance.
Is this review independent of industry funding?
The Cochrane review itself is conducted independently. However, some of the individual studies it pools received industry funding. The Cochrane authors address this by conducting sensitivity analyses and flagging potential biases. They note that industry-funded studies tend to show more favorable results, which is why they emphasize independent replications.
What's Your Experience?
The evidence is clear at the population level, but individual experiences vary enormously. We want to hear from you:
- Did vaping help you quit smoking? How long did it take?
- Did you try NRT (patches, gum) first? What was your experience?
- Are you concerned about the long-term health effects of vaping?
- Should US public health agencies follow the UK's lead in endorsing vaping for cessation?
Has vaping helped you quit smoking?
- Yes, I quit completely using vapes
- I switched from smoking to long-term vaping
- I tried vaping but went back to smoking
- I never smoked, just curious about the evidence
