Quiet features are the ones you have to look for. They're not on the front of the bag. You'll find them on the back, in fine print, or nowhere at all—and that's the problem.
The roast date is the loudest whisper of them all. It's often stamped on the bottom or side of the bag, sometimes in a format you have to decode (like 'Roasted 03/14' or 'R 03/14'). If a roaster prints a roast date, they're confident in their product. If they don't, they're hiding something.
Other whisper features to appreciate:
- A one-way valve—let's CO2 out without letting oxygen in. That's good.
- An opaque bag—light degrades coffee, so a dark pouch is better than a clear one.
- Whole beans instead of ground—ground coffee goes stale in minutes, whole beans last for weeks.
- A 'roasted on' date that's within the last month—that's the gold standard.
These are the details that actually predict how your morning cup will taste.
