Marketing loves a loud feature. Resealable zippers, one-way valves, nitrogen flushing, fancy fonts screaming 'small batch.' Some of these matter, but a lot of them are just noise. The most common loud feature is the best-by date itself, printed big and bold. It looks reassuring, but it can be two years out from the roast date. That's not freshness—that's a suggestion.
Other loud features to watch for:
- 'Premium' or 'gourmet' labels with no origin info—means nothing.
- 'Arabica' printed everywhere—most specialty coffee is arabica anyway.
- 'Dark roast' as a selling point—dark roasts often mask stale beans, so be extra careful there.
- Any claim about 'small batch' without a roast date—how small is the batch if they can't tell you when it was roasted?
Loud features are designed to make you feel good in the aisle. They don't tell you if the coffee is fresh.
