We went through the usual advice, and some of it works better than others. Here's what we tested:
- Washing in cold water: This is the first thing to try. Cold water keeps dye molecules from loosening up, so they stay put. It helped a lot in our tests.
- Turning the tee inside out: This protects the outer surface from friction, which can scrub dye off. It also keeps the graphic from cracking.
- Using a color-catching sheet: These sheets trap loose dye in the wash water, so it doesn't redeposit on other clothes. We saw a noticeable difference.
- Adding vinegar to the first wash: Some people swear by it. We found it helped a bit, but it's not a miracle cure.
- Air drying instead of using the dryer: Heat can set a stain and also weaken the fibers. Air drying is gentler and gave us the best results.
We also tried washing with a gentle detergent, and that made a difference too—harsh chemicals can strip dye.
