Let's get you set up. You'll need:
- A pour-over dripper (like a V60 or Kalita)
- Filters (paper is easiest for a clean cup)
- A kettle (gooseneck is nice, but not required)
- A scale (or a measuring cup and tablespoon)
- Fresh coffee, ground medium-fine (like coarse sand)
Step-by-step:
- Boil water and let it sit for 30 seconds. Aim for about 200°F (93°C).
- Measure 20g of coffee and grind it to a medium-fine consistency.
- Place the filter in the dripper and rinse it with hot water—this removes paper taste and preheats your mug.
- Add coffee, then pour about 40g of water in a spiral, starting from the center and working outward. Let it bloom for 30 seconds.
- Continue pouring in slow circles until you reach 320g of water total. Keep the pour steady and try to finish around 2:30–3:00 minutes.
- Let it drain, then enjoy.
That's the basic formula. It's forgiving, and you'll get a clean, balanced cup even on your first try.
