You've seen it: that fuzzy halo of tiny balls around the neckline, right where the fabric rubs against your skin or your bag. It's not a cheap tee problem, either. Tri-blends are a cotton-poly-rayon mix, and that soft, drapey feel is exactly what makes the collar vulnerable. Once you know what's causing it, you can stop it before it starts.
Mistake 1: Washing with the wrong load
Most of us toss tees in with everything else—towels, jeans, hoodies with zippers. Those heavier fabrics grind against the collar during the wash, and the friction is what raises the fuzz. The collar is already the most stressed part of the shirt (it stretches over your head), so it pills first.
Mistake 2: Wearing a backpack strap over the collar
If you commute with a backpack or messenger bag, the strap sits right on the collar. Every step, every shift of the bag, rubs the fabric. Over weeks, that constant abrasion does exactly what the wash cycle does—only slower. It's the sneakiest cause because you don't notice it until the damage is done.
Mistake 3: Tumbling in the dryer
Heat and tumbling are brutal on tri-blend fabric. The dryer thrashes the tee against itself and other clothes, and the heat weakens the fibers. Even if you wash carefully, a hot dryer can undo all of it in one cycle.
