This is where a lot of friction happens. Here's how to handle it gracefully:
- Give people space. If you're outside and someone is standing nearby, either step a few feet away or wait until they leave. A little distance goes a long way.
- Don't blow vapor at people. This should be obvious, but apparently it's not. Exhale away from others, not toward them.
- If someone says something, don't argue. "My bad, I'll move" is the correct response. Even if you think you're in the right, it's not worth the fight.
- Understand that some people have legitimate concerns. People with asthma, allergies, or respiratory conditions might actually be affected by vapor. Pregnant people might want to avoid any risk. Kids' developing lungs are more vulnerable. Respect that.
- Don't give the "it's just water vapor" lecture. It's not just water vapor — it's an aerosol with nicotine, flavoring chemicals, and ultrafine particles. Even if the health risk is low, dismissing someone's concern is rude. Just move or stop. It's not that hard.
For the science on secondhand exposure, see our secondhand vape exposure guide. The short version: substantially less harmful than secondhand smoke, but not nothing — which is why basic consideration matters.
