Here's where mesh coils shine. The metal mesh grid heats a larger surface area evenly, so your e-liquid gets vaporized more consistently. The result is usually cleaner, more intense flavor and denser vapor. If you're switching from cigarettes, that flavor hit can be what makes the switch stick.

Standard coils use a wire wrapped around wicking material. They heat from the center out, which can lead to hot spots and slightly muted flavor if you don't wick them perfectly. That's not to say they taste bad—many vapers prefer them for certain juices—but on average, mesh delivers more.

Decision cue: If flavor is your top priority, even on a budget, mesh is worth the extra few dollars. If you're not picky, standard coils will be fine.
