How many FDA-authorized vape products are there?
As of September 13, 2026, 48 e-cigarette products have received FDA PMTA marketing authorization. These come from 5 manufacturers: R.J. Reynolds (16), NJOY (10), JUUL Labs (8), Logic (8), and Glas (6).
Are there any FDA-authorized fruit-flavored vapes?
Yes. Glas G2 Gold (mango) and Glas G2 Sapphire (blueberry) are the only two fruit-flavored e-cigarette products with FDA PMTA authorization. Both were authorized on May 5, 2026. No other manufacturer has received fruit-flavored authorization.
Is JUUL FDA-authorized?
Yes. The original JUUL device and 4 JUULpods (Virginia Tobacco and Menthol, in 3.0% and 5.0%) received marketing-granted orders in July 2025. The JUUL2 device and 2 pods (Virginia Tobacco and Polar Menthol, 18 mg/mL) were authorized in August 2026.
Are Elf Bar or Lost Mary FDA-authorized?
No. Neither Elf Bar nor Lost Mary has received FDA PMTA authorization. These products are widely available but are technically unlawful to market. For a comparison of these unauthorized disposables, see our Elf Bar vs Lost Mary analysis.
What is the difference between PMTA authorization and FDA approval?
There is no such thing as "FDA-approved" e-cigarettes. The FDA grants marketing authorization through the PMTA process, which means the product may be lawfully marketed. Authorization is based on a public health standard, not a safety determination.
Can I buy FDA-authorized vapes online?
Yes, but only from licensed retailers that comply with PACT Act requirements for online sales. FDA authorization is federal, but online sales must also comply with state laws, age verification, and shipping restrictions.
Do state flavor bans apply to FDA-authorized products?
Yes. State flavor bans can restrict or prohibit the sale of FDA-authorized products, including menthol and fruit flavors. California, Massachusetts, New Jersey, New York, and Rhode Island have comprehensive flavor restrictions. Check our state-by-state flavor ban guide for details.
Will FDA authorize more vape products?
It is possible but not guaranteed. The FDA has stated that additional PMTA decisions are pending. However, the authorization rate has been slow — 48 products over nearly 5 years. Recent signs suggest the FDA may be opening up to flavored products, as demonstrated by the Glas fruit authorization in May 2026.
Are FDA-authorized vapes safer than unauthorized ones?
FDA authorization means a product has undergone regulatory review, which includes toxicology and emissions data. However, "authorized" does not mean "safe." All e-cigarette products carry health risks. For the latest research, see our coverage of the VapeScan cardiovascular study.
What happened to JUUL's original PMTA denial?
In June 2022, the FDA issued Marketing Denial Orders for JUUL products. JUUL appealed, and in July 2022 the FDA administratively stayed the MDOs pending review. In July 2025, after completing the scientific review, the FDA granted marketing authorization for the original JUUL device and 4 pods.
How often is this list updated?
We monitor FDA announcements and update this list whenever a new marketing-granted order is issued. The last update was September 13, 2026, following the JUUL2 authorization on August 27, 2026.
