
What Is Temperature Control Vaping? A Beginner's Guide
Temperature control (TC) is a feature on advanced mods that limits the coil's maximum temperature. It prevents dry hits, extends coil life, and gives you a consistent vape from the first puff to the last. It's also the most misunderstood feature in vaping.
How it works: TC mods monitor the coil's resistance in real time. As the coil heats up, its resistance increases. The mod calculates the temperature from the resistance change and cuts power when the coil reaches the set temperature. This happens hundreds of times per second. You don't feel it — the vape just stays consistent.
What you need: A TC-compatible mod and a coil made from stainless steel (SS316L), nickel (Ni200), or titanium (Ti). Kanthal and nichrome coils do not work with TC. Most pod system coils are kanthal — they won't work. You need a rebuildable atomizer or a tank with TC-compatible coil heads.
Recommended settings: 200-220°C (390-430°F) for fruit flavors. 220-240°C (430-460°F) for dessert and custard flavors. The sweet spot for most vapers is 215°C (420°F).
TC is not worth the effort for most vapers. The learning curve is steep, the setup is finicky, and the benefit is marginal. If you're happy with wattage mode, stay there. TC is for the hobbyist who wants to squeeze every last drop of performance out of their setup.
