Pregnancy Cessation Checklist
- Quit ALL nicotine products immediately upon discovering pregnancy — not just cigarettes, also e-cigarettes
- Do NOT switch from smoking to vaping as a "harm reduction" strategy — both deliver harmful nicotine
- Contact your healthcare provider for personalized cessation support
- Call 1-800-QUIT-NOW (1-800-784-8669) for free cessation counseling
- Join a prenatal support group — peer support increases quit rates
- Avoid environments where vaping or smoking occurs — secondhand exposure also carries risk
- Be honest with your obstetrician about all nicotine use — they can't help if they don't know
- Remember: quitting before or during the first trimester reduces low birth weight risk to near-normal levels
The Surgeon General's report confirms that low birth weight risk drops to normal if you quit before pregnancy or during your first trimester. This means it's never too late to quit — but earlier is always better. For mental health support during cessation, see our vaping and mental health research guide.
