Vaping and Dehydration: Why You're Thirsty and How to Fix It
If you started vaping and suddenly feel thirsty all the time, it's not in your head. Vaping causes dehydration. Here's why and how to fix it.
PG and VG are both hygroscopic — they absorb water from their surroundings. When you inhale vapor, the PG and VG pull moisture from your mouth, throat, and lungs. That moisture gets exhaled as part of the cloud. The result is a dry mouth, a scratchy throat, and increased thirst. The effect is mild but constant.
The fix is simple: drink more water. Not coffee. Not soda. Water. You need about 500ml more water per day as a vaper than you did as a non-vaper. If you're vaping heavily (10ml+ per day), you need closer to a liter of extra water. Keep a water bottle at your desk. Drink before you feel thirsty — by the time you feel thirst, you're already dehydrated.
PG is more dehydrating than VG. If the dry mouth is bothering you, switch to a higher-VG juice (70/30 instead of 50/50). The trade-off is less throat hit and less flavor intensity. For most people, the solution is just drinking more water.
Vaping also dries out your nasal passages. If you're getting nosebleeds after starting vaping, it's the dehydration. A humidifier in your bedroom at night and more water during the day will fix it within a week.
