Most vape device failures send a warning before they happen. The problem is that most people do not know what the warning looks like.
Here are five signals your device is telling you to stop. Not "use it more carefully." Stop.
1. The device body is swelling — anywhere.
A lithium-ion battery in thermal runaway precursor mode doesn't always vent dramatically. Sometimes it swells quietly. A 0.5mm gap that wasn't there yesterday between the chassis and the panel. A button that sits slightly higher. A USB port that is suddenly tight. If the device body geometry has changed, the battery inside has changed. Turn it off. Do not charge it. Recycle it.
2. Unusual heat during charging — not warmth, heat.
A 2A charge on a healthy 18650 produces a 5-8 degree Celsius rise. If your device is uncomfortably hot to hold during charging, the internal resistance of the cell has climbed past safe limits. That resistance converts charge current to waste heat. More resistance, more heat, less safe. Unplug and replace.
3. Heavy leaking that is not condensation.
Condensation is a few droplets around the airflow inlet. Leaking is a pool. If your pod or tank is losing more than 0.5ml per day without being used, the seal has failed. A failed seal means e-liquid is migrating somewhere it shouldn't be — potentially into the battery compartment or onto the chipset contacts. That is a short circuit waiting to happen.
4. Burnt taste that doesn't go away after replacing the coil.
A burnt taste on a fresh coil means the problem isn't the coil. It could be a chipset calibration issue sending incorrect wattage. It could be a short in the 510 connection. It could be e-liquid that has caramelized inside the chimney from previous overheating. Whatever it is, the device is not delivering what it claims to deliver. Something is wrong upstream.
5. The device charges but won't fire — or fires inconsistently.
This is the chipset throwing an error it can't display. Could be a loose internal connection. Could be a MOSFET on its way out. Could be a battery contact that has oxidized. None of these fix themselves. They get worse. And when they get worse, they can get worse fast.
The takeaway: Your device will tell you when it is failing. Not with a message on the screen. With heat, with shape, with taste, with behavior. Learn to read those signals. They are the difference between "I need a new device" and "I need a new kitchen counter." This content is intended for adults 21 years of age or older. Nicotine is an addictive chemical.
