Private label vape hardware is the fastest path to market. It is also the fastest path to a brand you do not actually own. Here are the five questions that determine which one you are getting.
Question one: who owns the mold? If the supplier owns the mold, they can sell the same device to your competitor next month with a different logo and a different color. If you pay for the mold, you own the mold, and the supplier cannot run it for anyone else. The cost difference is typically $3,000-8,000 for a compact device mold. That is not a cost. That is the price of brand exclusivity.
Question two: what is the minimum reorder quantity after the first run? The supplier's MOQ for the first order might be 5,000 units. But the MOQ for reorders on your private mold might be 10,000 because the line setup cost is the same and the supplier needs volume to justify the run. If you cannot afford 10,000 units per reorder, you cannot afford the private mold.
Question three: how long is the exclusivity period for your color and finish? Even if the mold is shared, most suppliers will offer a 6-12 month exclusivity window on a specific colorway if you commit to a volume minimum. Get it in writing. Verbal exclusivity is not exclusivity.
Question four: what happens to your branding if you stop ordering? Some suppliers will destroy branded components after 12 months of inactivity. Some will sell them to a liquidator. Some will repurpose them for a different client if you breach the exclusivity agreement. Know the answer before you stop ordering, not after.
Question five: who handles regulatory certification for your branded device? If the supplier has TPD notification for the base device, adding your brand name may require a new notification. That is a 3-6 month process and a $2,000-5,000 cost. If your supplier tells you "just use our notification," get a second opinion from a regulatory consultant.
Private label is a partnership, not a transaction. The questions you ask before signing the contract determine whether that partnership lasts six months or six years.
