You can clean a coil and get an extra 2-3 days out of it. You can't make it new again. The flavor will be slightly muted, and the coil will die faster after cleaning. But in a pinch, it works. Here's how.
Method 1: The vodka soak (for replaceable coil heads). Remove the coil from the tank. Submerge it in a small cup of vodka (or the highest-proof clear alcohol you have). Let it soak for 4-6 hours. Remove it, rinse with distilled water, and let it dry for 24 hours. The alcohol dissolves the gunk. The rinse removes the alcohol. The drying is essential — vaping alcohol is a bad idea.
Method 2: The hot water flush (for pod coils). Run the pod under hot tap water for 30 seconds. Blow through the mouthpiece to force water through the coil. Shake out excess water. Let it dry for 24 hours. This works about 50% of the time. The other 50%, the coil is too far gone.
Method 3: Dry burn and re-wick (for rebuildable coils). Remove the old cotton. Dry-fire the coil at low wattage (15-20W) until it glows. Dip the hot coil in water (carefully — don't touch the coil to the water, just the heat). The thermal shock blows off the gunk. Repeat 3-4 times. Re-wick with fresh cotton. This is the only method that actually makes the coil like new.
Cleaning a coil is a stopgap. It buys you 2-3 days. It's not a replacement for changing the coil. If you're cleaning the same coil more than twice, you're spending more time cleaning than it would take to earn the $5 for a new coil.
