An RTA (rebuildable tank atomizer) combines the flavor of an RDA with the convenience of a tank. You build your own coil, wick it, and the tank feeds juice automatically. The learning curve is steeper than a sub-ohm tank, but the cost savings and flavor are worth it. Here's the build guide.
What you need: An RTA, 26-gauge Kanthal or SS316L wire, a coil jig (3mm diameter), organic cotton, wire cutters, ceramic tweezers, and scissors. Total startup cost: $50-70 for the RTA, $15 for the tools and supplies.
The build: Wrap your wire around the 3mm jig 6-7 times. This gives you a 0.6-0.8 ohm coil. Install the coil in the RTA deck, tighten the screws, and clip the leads. Dry-fire at 20W until the coil glows evenly. Use ceramic tweezers to pinch and strum out hot spots.
The wick: Cut a strip of cotton about 3mm wide. Thread it through the coil — it should slide through with slight resistance. Cut the ends so they just touch the bottom of the wicking ports. Too long and you choke the juice flow. Too short and the tank leaks. This is the hardest part of building an RTA. It takes practice.
Start with a single-coil RTA. The Hellvape Dead Rabbit Solo and the Wotofo Profile X are the two best beginner RTAs. They're forgiving to build on and the flavor is excellent. Avoid dual-coil RTAs until you've mastered single-coil builds.
