Bottom-mounted ports force you to choose between leaking and finding something to lean the device against.
Side-mounted ports solve this problem entirely. The device stands upright while charging. The pod stays vertical. The liquid stays where it belongs. You can also use the device while it charges, which is not possible with a bottom-mounted port unless you have a right-angle USB-C cable and a lot of patience. The side port is simply the better design. The fact that most manufacturers still put the port on the bottom is a failure of imagination, not engineering.
Cable management is the second piece. A bottom-mounted port means the cable bends at a sharp 90-degree angle when the device is standing. Over weeks of charging, that bend point weakens. The cable frays. The connection gets loose. A side-mounted port lets the cable exit straight, with no bend. Cables last longer. Connections stay tighter. The difference is a few cents of manufacturing cost per device. The consequence is a cable that lasts six months instead of three.
There is one exception: devices with pass-through charging. If the device supports pass-through, meaning you can vape while it is plugged in, a side-mounted port is essential. A bottom-mounted port with pass-through is a contradiction. The feature exists but you cannot use it comfortably. You are paying for a capability the port placement prevents you from accessing.
Check the port location before you buy. It seems like a small thing. Until you have wiped liquid off your desk for the tenth time. Then it does not seem small at all.
