Not all vape batteries are the same. The safety protocols differ significantly depending on what's inside your device.
| Battery Type | Found In | Voltage | User Serviceable | Key Safety Risk |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Internal Lithium-Polymer (LiPo) | Pod systems, disposables, AIO devices | 3.7V | No (sealed in device) | Overcharging via wrong charger; puncture damage |
| Internal Lithium-Ion (18650 built-in) | Tube mods, pen-style devices | 3.7V | No (wired in) | Overcharging; aging degradation |
| External 18650 Li-Ion HIGHEST RISK | Box mods, regulated tube mods | 3.7V nominal (4.2V full) | Yes (user removes/inserts) | Short-circuit from loose transport; torn wraps; wrong charger |
| External 21700 Li-Ion | High-wattage mods, new-gen devices | 3.7V nominal (4.2V full) | Yes | Same as 18650, but higher capacity |
Key distinction: Internal batteries can't short-circuit from loose transport — the risk is almost entirely charging-related. External 18650/21700 cells add the risk of pocket short-circuits, torn wraps, and improper charger use. If your device has a removable battery, you need to follow every protocol in this guide — not just the charging section.
