This is a follow-up to our JUUL2 FDA authorization coverage from September 3. While that article covered the JUUL2 device authorization and the 48-product milestone, this piece focuses on what happened next: the historic fruit-flavor authorization, the public health backlash, and the growing gap between authorized and unauthorized products.
On September 3, the FDA authorized JUUL2 with tobacco and menthol pods, bringing total PMTA-authorized products to 48. We covered that in detail in our full JUUL2 authorization breakdown, including switching rate data showing 19.9%–34.6% for tobacco and 28.4%–49.3% for menthol. For the science behind those numbers, see our menthol vape switching science deep-dive.
But the bigger story is what came before and after: the first fruit-flavored authorization, and the organized pushback it triggered.
