Before 2026, the FDA had only authorized tobacco and menthol e-cigarette flavors. That changed when Los Angeles-based Glas Inc. received PMTA authorization for mango and blueberry-flavored e-cigarettes — the first fruit-flavored products ever cleared by the agency.
The FDA's decision was based on the same "appropriate for the protection of public health" standard applied to all PMTA reviews: the benefits to adult smokers seeking alternatives to combustible cigarettes must outweigh population-level risks, including youth appeal.
In plain terms: For years, the FDA's flavor authorizations were limited to tobacco and menthol. Glas's clearance of mango and blueberry breaks that pattern, opening the door for other fruit-flavored PMTA applicants. The question now is whether this is a one-off or the start of a broader shift.
