Ask yourself these five questions to narrow down your options:
- 1. Is FDA authorization important to you? If you live in a state with a PMTA registry law (like Washington, North Carolina, or Florida), or if you simply want the peace of mind that comes with a federally authorized product, choose the Vuse Alto or JUUL2. These are the only two options in our guide that are legally authorized for sale across the US.
- 2. Do you want the simplest experience? If you want something as close to smoking as possible — pick it up, puff, put it down — go with a draw-activated closed-pod system (Vuse Alto, JUUL2, or Elf Bar Elfa). No buttons, no settings, no refilling.
- 3. How much do you want to spend long-term? Closed-pod systems cost $60–90/month in pods. Refillable pod systems cost $20–40/month (device + e-liquid + coils). If you plan to vape long-term, refillable systems save you money within the first 2–3 months.
- 4. Do you care about flavor variety? FDA-authorized closed pods only come in tobacco and menthol. If you want fruit, dessert, or candy flavors, you'll need either a refillable pod system (use any e-liquid) or a pre-filled pod system like the Elf Bar Elfa (not FDA-authorized).
- 5. How many cigarettes do you smoke per day? Heavy smokers (1 pack+/day) usually prefer higher nicotine strengths (50mg / 5.0%) and a tight MTL draw. Light smokers (<10/day) often prefer 20–35mg nicotine and may find 50mg too strong.
