A leaking vape is annoying and expensive. It's also almost always fixable. Here are the five causes and the exact fix for each.
- Overfilling. If you fill the tank past the max line, the pressure forces juice through the coil and out the airflow. Solution: leave a small air bubble at the top of the tank. This air pocket is essential — it regulates pressure inside the tank.
- Incorrect coil installation. If the coil isn't seated properly, juice leaks around the seal. Solution: remove the coil, check the O-ring, and reinstall it. Push firmly until you feel it click. A half-seated coil is the single most common cause of leaking.
- Thin juice in a sub-ohm tank. 50/50 juice is too thin for most sub-ohm tanks. It flows through the wicking ports too fast and floods the coil. Solution: use 70/30 or higher VG in sub-ohm tanks.
- Temperature changes. Going from a cold room to a hot car creates pressure changes that force juice out of the tank. Solution: keep your device upright when moving between temperatures. The leak stops once the pressure equalizes.
- Worn O-rings. The rubber seals on your tank degrade over time. Solution: replace them. Most tanks come with spare O-rings in the box. If you've had the tank for more than 6 months, it's time.
If your tank leaks when you fill it but stops after 5-10 puffs, it's the fill port seal. The pressure from opening the top cap forces juice into the coil. Close the cap as soon as you're done filling. The faster you close it, the less juice escapes.
