If you vape and want to minimize lung health risks, here are evidence-based steps you can take:
- Choose lower-risk flavors. Stick to tobacco, menthol, or mint flavors. Avoid cinnamon, butter, creamy, and extremely sweet flavors — these are most likely to contain high-risk flavoring chemicals.
- Replace coils regularly. Don't wait for burnt taste. By the time you taste burning, the coil has been degrading for days and metal leaching has already increased.
- Use moderate power settings. Higher wattage = hotter coil = more byproducts. Most pod systems operate at 10-20W, which is reasonable. Sub-ohm vaping at 80-200W produces substantially more thermal decomposition products.
- Stay hydrated. PG draws moisture from mucous membranes. Drinking water helps reduce throat and airway dryness.
- If you were a smoker, don't go back. Even with all the risks listed above, vaping is still substantially less harmful than smoking. Relapsing to smoking would be worse for your lung health.
- Consider reducing nicotine. Gradually stepping down nicotine strength can reduce overall consumption. Many users find they can maintain satisfaction at lower strengths than they initially needed.
