There are three types of coils you'll encounter: round wire, mesh, and ceramic. Each has a different use case, and using the wrong one for your vaping style is why most people are unhappy with their setup.
Round wire is the original. It's cheap, and it works. It heats less evenly than mesh, which means hot spots and a shorter lifespan. But for MTL vaping at low wattage (8-15W), it's perfectly adequate. You'll find these in older pod systems and budget tanks.
Mesh is the current standard. A mesh strip has more surface area than a round wire coil, which means faster ramp-up, better flavor, and longer coil life. Any pod system or tank made in the last three years uses mesh. If you're buying replacement coils and mesh is an option, choose mesh.
Ceramic lasts the longest — up to a month — but the flavor is slightly muted compared to mesh. It's popular in the cannabis/CBD vaporizer market. For e-liquid vaping, it's a niche choice.
Resistance guide: Sub-ohm (below 1.0 ohm) = direct lung, high wattage, big clouds, low nicotine. Above-ohm (1.0+) = mouth-to-lung, low wattage, small clouds, high nicotine (nic salts).
Change your coil when the flavor drops off, not when it burns. You'll get a session of warning before the burnt taste. Listen to it.
